Grade 8 - The Number System
Standard 8.NS.1.1 - Practice substituting in numbers to evaluate variable expressions with squares and square roots.
Students will be expected to demonstrate an understanding of perfect squares and square roots, concretely, pictorially, and symbolically (limited to whole numbers). • Performance Indicators - N01.01 Represent a given perfect square as a square region, using materials such as grid paper or square shapes. - N01.02 Determine the factors of a given perfect square, and explain why one of the factors is the square root and the others are not. - N01.03 Determine whether or not a given number is a perfect square, using materials and strategies such as square shapes, grid paper or prime factorization, and explain the reasoning. - N01.04 Determine the square root of a given perfect square, and record it symbolically. - N01.05 Determine the square of a given number.
